Tae Kwon Do is inferior 90% of TKD black belts can't fight on the streets. Look up Bushidokan sometime, an orange belt in Busidokan is equal to most black belts in over all fighting skills in TKD. TKD has been diluted big time, they hand out black belts like candy. It should take years to earn a black belt, not a year and a half to two years to be bought in a TKD school.

Taekondo is inferior
saint23 getting a black belt is only a start. It's the ongoing training and dedication that count. This philosophy applies to all form of martial arts.

hmmmm
taekwon do is more about proper application, sure you learn big high kicks n things, but on the street the application of those kicks is what matters, like kicking to the knee or stomach, and using high jumps and fast spins as intimidation.
however I have seen cases where the high kicks n stuff work e.g. One time I was at a MA convention in London and afterwards me n a few buddies went to a bar to chill, we saw some other guys that had been there who were demoing TKD. Some guy walks into the bar n starts to pick a fight with one of em, he spends about a half hour shrugging off this dick heads comments, until the guy crossed the line and grabbed hold of the TKD guy, he pushed him away and when he came back for a fight the TKD guy does a spinning back roundhouse n floors him. But yeah michnguy is right, and as my Sensei says, "once you get your black belt you can start training." Reaction by:

interesting
On the street i would never use such a technique unless i had no other choice. so for him to di it in the bar in a confined space with heaps of people surrounding means he is a very confident fighter.
I am in kung Fu, many outside styles see a lot of our movements as pointless (for they don't know the true meaning of the technique) but these techniques i qould do against another martial artist. But against someone of the street, or in the pub, an MMA fighter etc etc... i would choose to use such complicated movements. a spinning back kick is time consuming and is a risky technique. a front kick i would have used. in a street situation, where i feel i am in risk of being hurt, i go for direct, simple techniques... u will find they work against 95% of all street fighters. But getting a black belt/sash/singlet what ever is the start of your martial art training. everything before that is to teach you the techniques, and prepare you for whats about to come. Reaction by:

HEY
whats everyone's opinions on spinning hook kicks. i've been practicing them quite a lot, but i've never attempted it in sparring. does anyone find this kick effective?
or have any suggestions, etc.. Reaction by:

a great kick
This is a great finishing technique. i have used them a lot, and a variation of it called the tiger tail. Even though i love the kick so much, they are not a prefered kick for me. One, there is a time when you have your back to the opponent and two i have a lot bigger than most people i fight, so i take longer and am left exposed more.
As you in an MMA situation, i would use it when the guy is tired, when it is nearing the end of the fight. It is a great shot to get in for the kidneys as well (are you aloud to have kidney shots in mma?) my favourite targets for it are knees and head. kidenys are too well protected by arms and legs for such a kick. but if the person is tired, and not ready for it, it will hit. Tae Kwon Do NOT Inferior
Tae kwon do is not inferior, not style is inferior or weak, there are only practitioners that are weaker, and there are weaker practitioners in any style.
I can make sweeping statements about how useless kung fu is becasue i saw a old kung fu master not being able to mix it with younger karate black belts. Think about that..No Style is bad or better then the other...just different. There are those that do one style, and swear till they go blue that their style is the best, these people are closed minded and frankly have no idea. You need to accept all the different arts, one isn't better then the other. and finally saint23 you can't say that Tae kwon do is inferior. it's the person. and as for street fighting..dude i know tae kwon do black belts that have kicked people into orbit. Now you will sit there and say...you love tae kwon do..yea well i do..but i also do other styles cause i am not a zombie/slave to one style Comment by: northern ireland tkd,

you see the thing is that grade doesnt matter in any martial art when you are on the street, it just means that you can do the patterns, hand/foot techniques etc.
however tkd is effective with the correct practitioner. you cant say its inferor to everyone. it doesnt matter if you wait 3 or 7 years for a black belt because when you get it on the street your either a good fighter or not. i do taekwondo and i know what you mean in some organisations they hand them out like candy. tobe fair in our organisation there are gradings every 3 months until red belt. but in our organisation only those who are ready are recommended by the coach to the master. so if your arent ready you keep waiting until you are ready. and the gradings are not easy the higher grading you get the harder it gets for you are expected to be fit and ready. but i agree most orgs are a disgrace they hand out black belts so that their players can compete at higher level comps. they should wait longer as there is alot to be learnt especially mentally, when you get your black belt in any art you should feel that you have earned and deserved it. |
