Indeed
This is an old fight. William Claimed to be the best Wing Chun fighter and pissed off some of the other Wing Chun groups, especialy the WingTsun practioners like Emin Bostepe. William did a seminar and Emin challenged him into a fight. William said that he didn't want to fight then suddenly Emin attacked. This is not in the video off course. I spoke with William about this fight when met him in Hong Kong in 1999. Nowadays Emin also says that it was wrong what he did in those days. BTW they are both Wing Chun fighters in this movie.
I have to agree that Wing Chun is limited in groundfighting. My opinion is that it is always better to keep standing. Especialy in streetfights where you can expect that friends of your opponent join in when you are on the ground. But in the ring with rules for groundfighting you lose with Wing Chun. Reaction by:

Well, Wing-Chun has not proven to be an effective stand up martial art either. And you'll get beat fighting multiple opponents no matter what art you do.
You see, any idiot you meet on the street could have wrestled at some point in his life. Or he may have seen a tackle before. Either way, he could come barreling down on you, and you may not have a choice on going to the ground ( Unless you're a wrestler yourself, in which you can defend it). And when you're on the ground and don't know what you're doing, you're in trouble, cuz that's when the punches come. Even in multiple opponent fights, grappling and doggpiling tactics are not uncommon. And don't think you'll outstrike 5 guys standing In the ring, Wing-Chun loses. On the street, wing-chun loses. And by the way, this was a streetfight that went to the ground. And it looks like no one interferred. Soooooo...... Where are those friends you speak of who were suppose to stomp on Bozetepe?

Wing Chun Incident in Germany
A lot has been said about the Cheung/Boztepe incident in Germany and I suspect much more will be written on this incident - by a considerable amount by people who were not even born at the time.
William Cheung was considered by many to be an extremely gifted and talented Wing Chun practitioner. In good faith he accepted an invitation to deliver a Two Days Seminar on the art of Wing chun.He was never invited to a prepared and deliberately planned AMBUSH. At the start of the Training Seminar,he was approached by Emin Boztepe supported by scores of followers - a request was made by Emin to a fight rationalized by what William wrote to the elders of the system in Hong Kong some time before.William responded,"yes, he will fight but at the end of the seminar." It is no secret,a school boy scrap followed. Some facts need to be established.William Cheung did not go to Germany to challenge anyone to fight{he alone knows what shape he was in};He was surrounded by scores of Boztepe's followers; William accepted the offer to fight but at the end of the seminar; In the midst of alerting the sponsor of the event Boztepe made his move;A chopped up tape suppose to tell us the details of the scrap;Boztepe makes a pile of money for a 30 second ambush[my interpretation];To me - the Western Press presents a view that exaggerates the incident and Boztepe's skill. I urge all practitioners of the art to observe both William and Emin when they are performing any aspect of the fighting system.Appreciate the philosophy of what is being said, the rational for doing what and why.Feel and observe the rhythm of each practitioner performing their art - this is what I feel the incident owes us.It was said before I came into the art and I hope long after I have left...when William Cheung performs Wing Chun the rhythm fuses and what is observed is truly an Art Form. i heard different
I heard different from that story. I heard that he went to Germany for a seminar, and at the end of a demonstration or the whole seminar (can't remember which) he said in order to prove his skills, and to prove the skills that wing chun posses, he will challenge anyone in the crowd.
and so someone accepted his offer. and it ended up being him no the ground holding one of his students between himself and the crazy german guy. do you have a link to the video, or where i could find the video? i don't so much as care that a master got beaten by a thug, but the very idea that he would hold one of his students between himself and another fighter angers me to no end. and i want to know the truth in this matter. cheers |
